Top 5 - Punishing modern games
Some like their games soft. Others like them hard. And in some cases, the player doesn't have a choice and will have to suffer every avenue for little more than the game's pleasure. And to tell them off, of course. So let's prime our souls and thicken our skin for our top five most punishing games.
5. Spelunky
Spelunky may have the outward appearance of a kiddies Flash game, but lose your wits for just a second and one of its many obstacles will mark your immediate demise. Levels are completely randomised every time you die as well, so good luck memorising any patterns. Bloody spike pits!
4. Super Meat Boy
Manoeuvring a skinless block-shaped boy around menacing levels might sound like a walk in the park. But what happens if you don't do it exactly right and slip up just once in the process? You explode into a mist of giblets and right back to the beginning of the level you go. Over and over again. Just one more try, I swear!
3. Counter-Strike
The granddaddy of all multiplayer FPS games isn't a mere pushover like its offspring. Running on the essence of pure skill-on-skill and precision, Counter-Strike itself doesn't want to kill or punish you. It's the human opposition who wish to slaughter you and teabag your bloody corpse afterwards who wants to do that.
2. Dark Souls
Known for its insane difficulty and trial-and-error gameplay, Dark Souls is the RPG equivalent of a field of mouse traps. Even the messages left by past players aren't exactly helpful. Some call it unfair and artificially difficult, but if you can look at death as a lesson rather than a punishment you might just fall in love with it.
1. I Wanna Be the Guy
Some punishing games wish to teach players a lesson. Others strive to cause pain and give players a flat-out mental breakdown. And unless you're able to tap into the game's psyche and obliterate it from within, you're heading for the latter. I Wanna Be the Guy is Super Mario Bros. from the mind of a sadist for the pleasure of gaming masochists. What a combination!
